Pleased to hear it :)
I’m sorry to hear that you think my feelings on the Union are shit. Let’s suppose that your figures are true and not exaggerated or overestimated. Your motivation for leaving the Union is that the oil wealth of our little island lays off the coast of Scotland, and you should keep it all? Because Scotland is nearest - it should be all Scottish? There is no other way to interpret this other than extremely short-term, Nationalist selfishness. Let’s assume oil is relevant for another 20 years, or even 50 years. Where’s your sense of equality for all inhabitants of the UK? If an oil reserve was found off Cornwall would you think it was reasonable for the South West to secede from the UK in order to enjoy the benefits of this wealth all for itself? What about distribution of wealth? The socialisation of resources. Where’s the sense of fairness and social justice that Scotland pride’s itself on? My worry for Scotland is that even if the best predictions are true about the amount of oil and it turns into a Highland utopia, oil will simply not be used in the same way that it is now in 20 years time. That’s not enough time to build significant financial reserves. Read any article you care to Google about the growth of sustainable, renewable energy and you’ll see that putting all of Scotland’s eggs in the oil basket is a bleak option.
If you think you will directly benefit from the North Sea oil in an independent Scotland you are sadly mistaken. It doesn’t suddenly become the Scottish people’s personal wealth. At best it will give a Scottish government some political leverage but the reality is that it will be contracted out to the same multinational conglomerates who control the global oil supply. You’re at the mercy of the markets. Ask the average citizens of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran, China how their vast national oil wealth effects them on a day to day basis.
